About The ABEM EMS Certification Exam
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) involves prehospital emergency patient care, including initial patient stabilization, treatment, and transport to hospitals in specially equipped ambulances or helicopters.
Exam Stats:
- 300 multiple choice questions, each with a single-best answer
- Each EMS Exam appointment is 8 hours in length
- 40% of test is based on Clinical Aspects of EMS Medicine
- Usually takes place in October
- Administered at computer-based testing centers
The EMS Certification Exam is criterion referenced. A criterion-referenced exam uses a predetermined standard, which is adopted by the EMS Subboard as reflecting its performance standards (The Core Content of EMS Medicine). All candidates meeting the standard will pass the exam. Quotas or required percentages of candidates passing are not used to determine the passing score.

Dr. John McManus, MD, MBA, MCR, FACEP, FAAEM, FSEM is a retired military colonel with a wealth of teaching experience. He has taught as a Professor of Emergency Medicine and EMS at Augusta University as well as an Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at University College Cork. John has served as a speaker for the American College of Emergency Physicians and is the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Director.
